Northfield Shares Celebrates National Volunteer Week 2019

NORTHFIELD, MINN. (April 2, 2019) – Northfield Shares, a community foundation centered on philanthropy, volunteerism and collaborative leadership, is celebrating National Volunteer Week from April 7-13. National Volunteer Week, which was established in 1974, is a signature event and effort of Points of Light, the world’s largest nonprofit organization dedicated to encouraging and empowering the spirit of volunteer service.

“The impact of individuals devoting time in service towards others is powerful,” said Mike Krance, Northfield Shares executive director. “Opportunities like National Volunteer Week mobilize community members to unite toward building a thriving, healthy area in which to live, play and work. It’s also a great way to honor and celebrate the many volunteers that make Northfield such a special community.”

Krance urges Northfield residents to pick up a copy of the April 10 edition of the Northfield News. This special edition features a four-page spread celebrating National Volunteer Week and spotlighting a variety of people making an impact as volunteers.

Northfield Shares encourages community members to get involved in volunteer service year round, and they have developed an online volunteer portal that makes it easy for individuals to find service opportunities tailored to their interests and skills. Nonprofit organizations are encouraged to sign up for the free online platform at northfieldshares.galaxydigital.com.

In addition, Give 5 is an ongoing volunteerism campaign at Northfield Shares that serves to inspire a habit of volunteerism in community members as a way to enhance their own lives as well as the lives of their neighbors. By taking the pledge, individuals agree to dedicate five hours per month in service toward others. Community members are invited to take the pledge by visiting northfieldshares.org/pledge.

Mary Lynn Oglesbee, Northfield Shares Inspiring Volunteerism Committee chair, said,  “We are excited about National Volunteer Week because of its potential to bring together people from all walks of life to serve the greater good. We hope people will see the week as an opportunity for greater community service, whether it’s something as small as helping a neighbor clean out a flower bed, or as large as either joining a nonprofit board or hosting a fundraising event.”
