SHARING A MEAL TO BUILD COMMUNITY

NORTHFIELD, MINN. (June 26, 2019)Northfield Shares A Dinner is an opportunity for the people of Northfield to gather with friends and members of the community to share a meal together at one long table. This dinner is about celebrating our Northfield community, meeting new people, strengthening community ties, and connecting neighborhoods. Food brings us together, and the meal will feature local ingredients grown by local farmers and prepared by local chefs. Art activities and entertainment featuring local artists and musicians will also be part of the event. The dinner will take place on Sunday, August 25 on Division Street, which will be closed off to traffic for the afternoon. The event is free for those who make a reservation. Reservations will open July 8 and everyone in the Northfield community is welcome.

For several months, a group of Northfield volunteers have envisioned gathering 1,000 community members to share a meal at one long table down Division Street. The idea, spearheaded by Jennifer Sawyer, Jill Metz and Nancy Carlson, has been a success in many small communities. “We believe that friendships are deepened, community is extended and connections are made when community members gather around a common table,” said Carlson. “Our community shines with collective and individual assets that support and nurture each of us,” she added. “Our vision is for every community member to feel welcome to this table. The event is free because we don’t want any barriers to participation. Many community members have already donated to make this event possible, but we are seeking additional donations to support the number of people we anticipate. No donation is too small.”

Donations can be made directly to the host of the event, Northfield Shares, at northfieldshares.org. There is a GoFundMe page or people can write a check directly to Northfield Shares, 205 Water St., Northfield, MN 55057 (memo: community dinner). The donated funds will be 100% earmarked for the event and any donations received above the amount necessary to meet all event expenses will be donated to the Northfield Community Action Center Food Shelf.

Volunteers are also needed especially the day of the event. People can sign up on the Northfield Shares website as well.

The organizers of this event thank Northfield Shares, Northfield area’s community foundation founded to advance philanthropy, inspire volunteerism and promote collaborative leadership. For more information about Northfield Shares and Northfield Shares a Dinner, visit northfieldshares.org.
